Emilio Bonifacio’s stay as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays is over.

The Kansas City Royals have picked up the underacheiving utility man from the Jays for a player to be named or cash considerations.

Bonifacio was said to be a piece that Toronto GM Alex Anthopolus pushed hard to have included in this summers blockbuster deal with the Miami Marlins, but with all the hype surrounding the team this season he is just one of a number of Jays to not live up to expectations.

The trade with Kansas City is not the only roster move Toronto made on Wednesday, they selected the contract of outfielder Kevin Pillar, recalled fan favourite infielder Munenori Kawasaki, and placed Centre Fielder Colby Rasmus on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.

The twenty eight year old Bonifacio, made 94 appearances in a Blue Jays uniform splitting time between second base, shortstop, and all three outfield positions.

Bonifacio provided the Blue Jays with versatility and some speed (12 stolen bases in 18 attempts) but struggled at the plate, and hit just .218/.258/.321 in 282 plate appearances.

The Royals will be able to retain Bonifacio in 2014 if they so choose. He earns $2.6 million in 2013, and will remain under team control as an arbitration-eligible player through 2014.

Bonifacio’s younger brother, Jorge, is an outfield prospect in the Royals’ organization and now plays at Double-A with Northwest Arkansas.
