The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and German authorities, have charged two people with importation of approximately 10 kilograms of opium.

On August 3rd, 2013, German authorities intercepted a parcel containing a controlled substance destined to a business in Burk’s Falls, Ontario. The parcel was examined and was found to contain approximately 10 kilograms of opium. The German authorities contacted the RCMP International Liaison Office in Germany who started a joint investigation with the Sudbury RCMP Detachment.

On August 13th, 2013 members from the Sudbury RCMP Detachment executed a search warrant, with the assistance of the Almaguin Highlands OPP and the North Bay OPP drug section, at a business located within the community of Burk’s Falls.

The search resulted in the arrest of Wayne Cassidy (64 years old) from Huntsville, Ontario and Randall Cox (53 years old) from Burk’s Falls, Ontario. Cassidy and Cox have been charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with one count of importation of a controlled substance and one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking of a controlled substance.

Cassidy and Cox appeared in court in Parry Sound on August 14, 2013 where they were released and are scheduled to attend Sundridge court for their next appearance on September 24th, 2013.
