Ricky Romero’s rough spring just got a  bit longer, his encouraging start on Tuesday was not enough to make up for his pre-season woes thus far.

The Toronto Blue Jays announced that the left-hander has been optioned to single-A Dunedin of the Florida State League.

“He’s not ready and he’s not as sharp as he needs to be. We need more time,” general manager Alex Anthopoulos said.

The timing of the move was a little puzzling coming shortly after Romero picked up the win in Toronto’s 6-3 victory over Pittsburgh.

“It’s not results as much as we see some things that he needed to change. You talk about direction and lines to the plate, it’s basically your balance going towards home plate and where your front foot lands. It sounds easy but it just takes time when you start to repeat it, he’s done this before, he has a tendency to do it. We have a plan for him, we know what we need to address, it’s just not coming as fast as we want it to come,” Anthopoulos added.

“He definitely took a step in the right direction today, it’s getting better, he just needs more time.”

Romero was last season’s  No. 1 starter in Toronto, but had the worst year of his career going  9-14 with a 5.77 ERA in 32 starts.

The move only confirms the win now mentality surrounding the Jays this season.  Romero has more of an upside than his replacement J.A. Happ but at this time, and with all the off-season moves the club has made this had to happen.  Hopefully for all Romero finds the magic and returns to Toronto this season, so what if takes a few weeks longer than expected.
