Border Services Seize Over 205 kgs of Suspected Drugs

MONTREAL, Nov. 5, 2013 – The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that it has seized suspected marijuana and suspected hashish from a vessel on the St. Lawrence River. On October 25, 2013, border services officers searched a ship at a port in the Trois-Rivières area. They discovered what is suspected to be 207 kg of marijuana and 4.8 kg of hashish.

The drugs were taken to the office of the Trois-Rivières Royal Canadian Mounted Police for further investigation.

“Our border services officers from the Flexible Response Team in Quebec City were highly vigilant. Thanks to their work, these drugs will never end up on our streets or in our communities,” stated Benoît Chiquette, CBSA Regional Director General, Quebec Region. “This seizure sends a clear message to smugglers that the CBSA is determined to counter all illicit activities at our borders.”

In 2012, the CBSA made 11,017 drug seizures in Canada, and marijuana is the fifth most commonly seized drug in the country after cocaine, ketamine, heroin and opium.
