A CP Rail freight train carrying dangerous goods derailed near Smiths Falls, Ont., Wednesday afternoon, causing headaches for many VIA Rail passengers.

The train was pulling five cargo containers and went off the rails shortly after 1:30 p.m.

No injuries have been reported as of yet, but there is some concern as one of the containers contained a dangerous material. Transportation Safety Board officials say it is unlikely to pose any danger to the public, and that the container is not leaking.

“The TSB is deploying to investigate, gather information and assess,” said spokesman Chris Krepski.

“One car contained dangerous goods but there were no leaks.”

The TSB couldn’t yet confirm what sort of dangerous goods were being transported.

VIA Rail train services between Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto have been interrupted because of the derailment, with passenger trains stopping in Cornwall to unload passengers onto buses to complete their routes.

Survey teams haven’t pinpointed exactly where the derailment happened.

Smiths Falls police and fire crews were at the scene of the crash as of 3 p.m.

A news release from the TSB released this afternoon reads as follows:

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is deploying a team of investigators to the site of a derailment in Smiths Falls, Ontario. At approximately 13:27 Eastern Daylight Time, a CP freight train derailed 5 intermodal cars. One of the cars contains dangerous goods, but it is not leaking and there is no danger to the public. The TSB will gather information and assess the occurrence.
