For what I feel have been good reasons Awesome Canada has stayed away from this extremely controversial story.  For the most part the allegations against City of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford have been just that, allegations, with little to no proof to back them up.  But today for the first time we have something concrete and on the record to talk about.

Ford admitted to smoking crack cocaine while in office Tuesday, telling reporters that he probably did it in while  a “drunken stupor” about a year ago.

“Yes I have smoked crack cocaine but am I an addict? No,” Ford said. “Have I tried it? Probably in one of my drunken stupors approximately a year ago. All I can do now is apologize and move on.”

The unexpected admission came after numerous attempts to coax reporters into asking him the “question” that they’ve been asking him since May when allegations of his drug use first surfaced.

Ford has seen renewed scrutiny since Police Chief Bill Blair announced last Thursday that police recovered a video that reportedly shows the mayor smoking from a glass pipe.

Ford has repeatedly denied that he is an addict of crack cocaine, but on Tuesday he stressed that he never denied smoking the drug.

“I wasn’t lying,” he said. “You didn’t ask the correct questions.”

Ford initially denied the existence of the video when the Toronto Star and Gawker first reported about its existence in May.

Speaking with reporters outside his office Tuesday, Ford repeated his calls for the release of the video.

“I don’t even recall their being a tape or a video, so I want to see the state that I was in,” he said.

Ford concluding his brief news conference by apologizing to his friends, his family and the people of Toronto.

So where do we go from here? With his admission Ford has truly painted himself in to a corner.  The mayor of Canada’s largest city who has been the laughing stock of the nation for months has pulled a Bill Clinton.  But admitted drug use and “sexual relations” in the oval office are two different levels of “what the hell did that Politian do” aren’t they?

While he may not be an addict, it isn’t out of the rehlm of possibility to believe that his judgement at times while acting as Toronto’s representative could be clouded, is it?
